Hossein Batooie is an Iranian immigrant living in Colorado. In 2025, he was sent to the Aurora immigration detention center as part of a larger operation to detain Iranian nationals during the war between Israel and the U.S. against Iran.

On the morning of June 22, 2025, five federal agents entered the residence of an Iranian man and Denver resident, Hossein Batooie. After he asked to see a warrant, he was attacked, injured, handcuffed, and transported to the USCIS office in the city. When he arrived, he noticed that other Iranian people had been detained as well. A few hours before he was taken, at 2:30 a.m. local time in Iran, the United States had bombed Iran and joined Israel in what is now known as the Twelve-Day War, which lasted from June 13 to June 24, 2025. Hundreds of Iranian immigrants were detained that day in the United States and Hossein was questioned by a federal official for possible intel about Iran. But he hadn’t returned home for over two decades.

Twenty-one years prior, in 2004, Hossein Batooie was granted legal status by an immigration judge after seeking asylum. Although told that ICE had no reason to hold him and that he would be let go, he found himself at the GEO Detention Center in Aurora, Colorado, for 10 months. There, he endured horrific conditions at the hands of The GEO Group, the private-prison corporation that owns the immigration detention center in Aurora. The following pages are “grievances” that Hossein Batooie filed against ICE and GEO Group.
